Artist Interview: Winky

Artist Interview: Winky

1. When did you first start your art journey?

The first memory that comes to mind was when I was around 8 years old. My first drawing was of Ariel from Disney's The Little Mermaid. I was trying to recreate the VHS cover art.

Drawing was really only ever a hobby until a few years ago when I started taking it more seriously and trying to move from pen & pencil into digital art. Below are some of my earlier drawings.

Lilies - Pencil

Spirit - Colored Pencils

Loco - Pen & Pencil

2. How would you describe your art style?

That's actually kind of a hard question to answer. I'm not really sure because I like to draw many different things. I would say the themes that I'm doing more recently are: whimsical & dark scifi / fantasy.

3. What inspires you?

One of my biggest inspirations early on was my father. He is a traditional artist that likes to draw portraits and also create pottery. Watching him design and create things was super interesting to me growing up.

More recently, I've been watching a lot of movies and TV shows that I've never seen before, and I'm definitely getting a lot of ideas from those stories.

4. Do you have any favorite works that you've done?

Another hard question to answer. I really do enjoy everything I've done from the very basic sketches to the more detailed pieces. A few years ago I did a set of three pencil drawings from the Alien universe and I thought they looked really cool.

Also the trippy collection was a lot of fun doing since I really love doing a cute / whimsical style.

5. What is your process from start to finish?

Before I even start sketching anything I try to visualize a general idea of what I'm aiming for in my head. I try to break that image into pieces in order to create more detail on those smaller pieces. Then I will just start sketching/shading the ideas and see where it goes. Once I have a good enough design I will transfer that to my computer and start working on it digitally.

Fun fact: I feel more creative/efficient working late at night.

6. What tools and programs do you mainly use?

Huion Kamvas 16 Pro Drawing Tablet & the open source software Krita.

7. Do you have any goals in terms of creating art?

I have a ton! I wish I was better at 3D visualization so that I could try and do more realistic pieces. Kim Jung Gi was one of my favorite artists to watch and learn from. He was so amazing at drawing from different perspectives. It's really sad that he recently passed away.

I'd also love to learn how to do 3D modeling someday. To take a 2D representation of an idea and turn it into a real physical model sounds amazing to me.

Another possibility is to go to art school. That would be so cool.

 8. What do you love about art?

That there's no limitation. You can do whatever you want with it. It really encompasses a huge variety of different styles and creative processes that I think everyone could find something that they enjoy creating. Also I love that you will never run out of things to learn. From different styles to new software programs, there's just so much to study, and I think that's part of the allure for me.

9. What's your favorite movie/tv show/food?

Hmm, that's so hard to decide. Even though I like to watch dark horror/scifi/fantasy films, I also really like to laugh and I remember Sausage Party made me laugh a lot. For TV show I would probably pick South Park / Rick & Morty / Solar Opposites. I really enjoyed the first season of True Detective also. Favorite food, well you can't go wrong with Korean BBQ or a bowl of Pho.

10. Where can people find you and your work?

Obviously you can find my work here at www.tribalyfe.com but I'm also on some social media sites. I'm not very good at it (social media) yet but I hope to get better. Please check me out at:
